He graduated from Pine Tree High School in 1973, Paris Jr. College in 1975 where he was president of the student body, and from Baylor University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree after having been named to the Dean's list. While at Pine Tree, Richard was an All-State member of the 1973 State Championship basketball team and, also, an All-State baseball player. He continued to play baseball on scholarship at Paris Jr. College and Baylor.
Richard was preceded in death by his father, Joe Stringer Sr. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Cathy, and daughters Allison and Melissa Stringer, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Jay Kauffman, and his mother Tommye Stringer, all of Longview, a sister and brother-in-law Judy and Dave Enders of Zionsville, Indiana, a brother Joe Stringer Jr. of Dallas, and a twin brother and sister-in-law Randy and Carla Stringer, also of Longview.
