I was always amazed at his memory. I was friends with his daughter for a few years, but we lost contact when we moved away for a year or so and when I came back never connected with her and didn't go to the D Q as often as a child. But was so surprised one day as a high school student stopped by for a cone with a friend and even before I got to the window Mr. Pickens was hollering good to see you Donna Gene how have you been. Would you like your favorite banana split? Guess what my friend and I shared a banana split. I stopped more often after that experience. GOD gave him a very special talent and it endeared him to everyone. You have been and will be missed. We don't get that kind of service anywhere any more.

The Marshall DQ was part of our dating years. Mr. Rex knew "kids from Karnack" by name and personality. He even knew when we had a spat and I was at the DQ with someone else! (rarely) He was a tease and shared such wholesome humor with ease. The few times he was not there to wait on me, I was disappointed.
I remember showing off my engagement ring and he was genuinely happy for us. Soon we celebrate our 59th anniversary, so today I will take my beloved to our local DQ in Lampasas in honor of Rex. We are blessed in reading about his later years knowing that they were really good. Our sincere condolences to his family.

You don't know me but I know Mr. Rex from many years ago, when I was in the hospital with polio. My parents went there many times and ate there. When he heard I was in the hospital, he would bring me a chocolate milk shake every day. He always made me laugh even when my Mom had to go home to take care of my brother. He would sit with me and tell me funny stories. He will forever live in my heart.
I'm so happy he had such a great life with his family, you were most certainly blessed and so was I.
Mr. Rex, rest in peace up their with our God in heaven. You deserve the best and you are getting to walk those golden roads. Till we meet again and share a chocolate milk shake together. I will always love you,

When i was a kid the DQ was one of my favorite places my dad would take our family out to eat. Mr. Rex would always take time to visit and pick on us kids. We loved to tell him "Rex Pickens your the dickens". He would just laugh out loud. He will always hold a place in Marshall History.

We use to walk to the Diary Queen on 59 S and nothing was like the hot dog and chocolate malt Mr. Rex had. Fond memories on this dear man. rest in peace and God bless the family.

Mr. Pickens you will never be forgotten. You were a true gentleman and treated me as a teenager with good humor and politeness. The high school class of 62 spent hours and probably little money at your place. Oh for one more chocolate malt....no they have never tasted the same at any other D Q . Mr. Rex lived across the street on Landsdowne from my grandparents, he always took time out for us neighborhood kids & always stopped what he was doing at the Dairy Queen to come visit with us. He will truly be missed. My Mom has told me many great stories about he & his family & all the fun times my family had together. he was a fixture of love in Hallsville & touched many folk's life. Mr. Rex was truly one of a kind, a true southern gentleman and a business man that never gave up thinking about business as long as we knew him. Even though we didn't meet him until a few years ago, he made a big impression on us by his ability to remember names and tell stories about people that our lives and paths had crossed. He always was worried about Ms. Paula and made sure she was taken care of when we were around them. Ms. Paula will surely miss him and our deepest thoughts and prayers are with you all. It was a pleasure having known Mr. Rex.
