Rev. James Dixon
Rev. James Dixon, 88, of Longview, was taken up into the presence of his Savior on Wednesday evening, April 16, 2003. Born in Dallas on May 4, 1914, he grew up in Grand Saline; he married Jeanne Cornelius in 1939, and they would have celebrated 64 years of marriage in June of this year. A graduate of the University of North Texas in Denton, the College of Marshall, and Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Dixon pastored several churches in central Texas until 1942, when he entered the US Army as a chaplain, serving in numerous places across North Africa and Europe until 1945. After the war, he was called to the Main St. Baptist Church in Grand Saline.
In 1949, he came to the Longview area as pastor of the Greggton First Baptist Church, where he served until his retirement in 1976. He later served the Oakland Heights Baptist Church of Longview as Pastoral Care Minister from 1980 to 1995. He was also named Pastor Emeritus of these last two churches where he served. He had preached and taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ for nearly 65 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jeanne Dixon of Longview; three children, Charles R. Dixon of Marshall, Mrs. Suzanne Fuller of Tyler, and David C. Dixon of Madrid, Spain; as well as nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the ?Spain Mission Fund,? through the Greggton First Baptist Church, 4520 W. Marshall, Longview, Texas 75604, or to the mission of your choice.
Funeral services will be held at 4 PM Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Oakland Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview, 1617 Judson Road.
The family will receive friends from 6 PM to 8 PM Friday evening, April 18, 2003, at the funeral home.
