Rayford E. Gantt
Funeral services for Rayford E. Gantt, 91, of Longview will be held at 12 p.m. July 13, 2009 in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview with Dr. David Massey officiating. Private interment will be in Rosewood Park.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at the funeral home.
Rayford was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on July 6, 2009, from his home in Longview.
Mr. Gantt was born November 18, 1917, in Klondyke, Texas, and raised in Bonham, Texas. He was the youngest of 10 children born to Dolphus and Mary Ellen Gantt. Rayford was a veteran of World War II who moved to Longview over 50 years ago, first as manager of Manley's Tire Store, later as salesman for McWilliams Furniture, and ending his career as co-owner of Mosley-Gantt Magnavox TV and Appliances Store.
Rayford married Oleta Stewart on her 20th birthday, June 26, 1938, and together they celebrated 71 years of marriage.
Rayford was a long time member of the Mobberly Avenue Baptist Church, and after a move to Hallsville, a member of the First Baptist Church of Hallsville.
His parents, nine brothers and sisters, and a host of friends and family preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Oleta; his son, Darrell Gantt of Seattle, Washington and daughter-in-law, Freda Gantt of Liberty City; daughter, Janice Gantt and Robert Smith of Longview; seven grandchildren, Latricia, Shawna, and Melinda of Longview; Billy of Mississippi, Kari Gantt of Liberty City, Randy Gantt of Seattle, Stacy Hammond of Juneau, Alaska, and Kelli Allen of Liberty City; 23 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; lifelong friends and family members Fred and Della Hicks, and Johnny and Linda Allen of Liberty City.
Rayford lived in his own home to the end and until recently could be found re-roofing his house, tending his garden, hummingbird watching, and was especially looking forward to his upcoming fishing trip. The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Heart'sWay Hospice, Chaplain Don Ross, special hospice nurses Barbara, Toby, and Deb, friends Mary Sullivan, Lafaye Richardson, Reeder Bissell, and Lynn Turtison. Special thanks to beloved daughter Janice and partner Robert Smith who provided incredible care. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
