Peggy Griffin Wininger's Obituary
Peggy Wininger, 92, passed away on September 14, 2023, at Arden Courts of Richardson, Texas, surrounded by loved ones.
Peggy was an alumna of Kilgore College and started her working life as a secretary at Eastman Chemical Company in Longview, Texas. There, she met Arthur "Art" Wininger. Art cleverly orchestrated their first meeting by engineering a carpool mishap, then gallantly offering Peggy a ride home. This marked the beginning of a relationship that would last 59 years until his death in 2012.
As a devoted and loving mother of four, Peggy instilled enduring values of resilience, compassion, and striving for excellence in her children. She was there for her children in times of need, traveling countless times to Houston for specialized medical care when one of them was seriously ill. Her faith was extremely important to her, and she was a lifelong member of Greggton First Baptist Church.
Peggy was a pillar of her extended family, organizing family reunions at beautiful lakes in Arkansas. In their golden years, Peggy and Art enjoyed the camaraderie of Longhorn football games in Austin and cherished gatherings with friends at Club Lake in Lindale, where fish fries and lakeside conversations were regular events.
A fan of flowers and nature, Peggy enjoyed gardening and made pressed flower keepsakes for her family and friends. Peggy was always very down to earth, but she dressed with style and was known for her collection of beautiful scarves that she enjoyed and often wore.
Even in her battle with Alzheimer's disease, Peggy demonstrated remarkable grace. While the illness took a toll, it could not diminish her innate positivity or her constant desire to help others.
She is survived by her children, Ann Whitehurst, Linda Kiser, Mike Wininger, and Steve Wininger, all of Dallas; her siblings, Joyce Smith and James Griffin; and her grandchildren, Kelly Kiser, Rachael Wininger, Stephanie Chininis, Jennifer Chininis, and great-grandchild Peter Chininis. She is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Don Griffin and Patsy Hughes.
A memorial service to celebrate Peggy's life will be held at Rader Funeral Home in Longview, Texas, at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 19th, followed by burial at Memory Park Cemetery. The family will welcome friends and loved ones for visitation at 9:00 AM prior to the service.
Peggy was passionate about advancing research on childhood cancer and was a proud supporter of MD Anderson Cancer Research. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in her memory can do so at MD Anderson's Donation Page. https://gifts.mdanderson.org/default.aspx?tsid=10503.
Peggy Wininger's legacy of love, strength, and family will always be remembered by those who knew her.
