Pauline Wood Cargill's Obituary
Pauline Wood Cargill 96 died at home on Thursday, July 16, 2009. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 20, 2009, in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home under the direction of Rader Funeral Home after a family burial at Memory Park.
Pauline was born November 13, 1912, in Longview to Bob and Ida Dee Harriss Wood. Her Harriss great-great-grandparents, Thomas and Dolly Roach Harriss, came from Rock Hill, SC, to East Texas in 1846 where they operated a stage stop near the present intersection of Rockwall Drive and US 80. Her great-grandfather, Pleasant S Harriss m Susan Peeler was constable when Gregg County was formed in 1873. Her grandfather T B Harris the final S was dropped around the turn of the century acquired substantial land holdings in the White Oak area, and constructed Lake Harris. Her grandmother, Willie Little Harris was the daughter of S Miles and Mollie Biggers Little.
Her paternal grandparents, John and Anna Sitton Wood, arrived with their family by train from Near Corinth, MS, in the late 1800s. Her father was a farmer and a familiar figure at the Norton & Barbee grocery store for many years.
She moved from the family farm into Longview where she lived with her aunt and uncle, Clara Harris and Gregg County Sheriff Martin Hays, to attend Longview High School from 1928 until 1931. At LHS, she was a standout basketball player. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor for two years before her marriage to Robert Cargill in 1933. She was a loyal supporter of her husband's business and civic activities until his death in 1986. In her widowhood, she traveled extensively with local bank travel clubs, and she supported the Gregg County Historical Museum enthusiastically. She was a long-time member of High Hopes Garden Club and of the Thelma Morgan Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Thomas Wood, her stepmother Gladys Wood, and her husband Robert Cargill. She is survived by her son and daughter-in law, Robert and Martha Cargill, her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Charles Kaplan of Longview, eight grandchildren, Jere Kent and Kari Kaplan of Danbury, CT, Kathy Kaplan of The Woodlands, Julie and Joe Thompson of Coppell, Melanie and Jeff Martin of Longview, Carrie and John Bernat of Ann Arbor, MI, William and Lauren Cargill of Greenbrae, CA, Tom Cargill and Hannah Kohlsaat of Asheville, NC, and Hope and Luke Butterworth of Asheville, NC, sixteen great-grandchildren, Hannah, Pauline, and Emma Kaplan, Ben, Zack, and Hunter Thompson, Timothy and Blake Martin, Julia and Rob Bernat, Lilia, Hope, and Juliet Cargill, Elliott and Max Butterworth, and Thomas Cargill, two nephews, Thomas and Steve Wood and their wives Pam and Sharon, respectively, of Longview, cousins Clara Jean Hodges and Jackie Dean and Diane Wood, and stepsister Elma Ash of Longview.
The family is deeply grateful to her caregivers during the past six years, especially Patsy Lewis, Sha Bolton, Mary Oliver, and Diane Huffman, to Janine Briley, and to Dr Frank Jackson and Louis Morgan Drug #4 for their loving care of our mother and grandmother.
