Patsy Plummer Guy's Obituary
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear or dread? The Lord is the refuge and stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1)
Patsy Plummer Guy left this earth and ran into the arms of her Savior on June 20, 2024. Born on May 25, 1935 to Henry and Margaret Plummer, Patsy grew up in the East Mountain area making her profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 9 and also began a lifelong love of playing the piano. At the age of 12, she fully dedicated her life to Jesus. It was a dedicated life of steadfast intercessory prayer, bible study, and scripture memory. These attributes became the foundation of her life. During this time, she began serious study of music, both voice and piano, and thus began a musical ministry to the Lord that lasted throughout her lifetime in a variety of ways.
In February, 1951, at the age of 15, Dr. Glenn Farr invited Patsy to come to First Baptist Church, Longview to be their soloist. She remained faithful at FBCL teaching Sunday School and GAs, singing in many choirs and ensembles as well as playing handbells, until her health prohibited her from attending.
Patsy graduated from Longview High School in 1953 and attended Kilgore College and Stephen F. Austin State University. On May 15, 1955 she married Reagan E. Guy, and they had 1 daughter, Vivian Kay.
Through the years Patsy taught piano and voice lessons from her home, helping children learn, not just to read and play music, but to appreciate and love music. She was often heard saying, “Music is CAUGHT and not just TAUGHT.”
Patsy led Children’s choirs at First Baptist Church, Longview for 43 years, teaching children from 4 year olds through 3 grade. She will always be remembered for her End of Year Graded Choir Concerts and singing, “I Am a Promise” with her choir - always reminding them that they are indeed a promise from the Lord, and that God loves them, hears them, and speaks to them.
One of the highlights of her life was the opportunity to spend 2 years teaching music classes to the children at School for Little Children where she played music games, prepared programs, used instruments, and helped establish a love for music in those young lives.
Patsy was more than just a musician; she had such creativity and was so imaginative. An excellent seamstress, she made many of Vivian’s clothes and sewing for others as well. In 1992, she founded and led the Banner Ministry at First Baptist Church. She and Vivian created many of the 18 banners through the years. She loved to cook and bake, was quite an artist, and loved painting.
In later years when Alzheimer’s was robbing her of all thoughts and memory, Patsy could still recite scripture and play those old familiar hymns like “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Jesus Loves Me” on the piano. She sang “Amazing Grace” and “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine” with full clarity and authority. She was a testimony of kindness to those around her, and showed courage, grace, and dignity through the difficult times.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Margaret Plummer, her husband, Reagan E. Guy, and her brother, Billy Ray Plummer. She is survived by her daughter and best friend, Vivian Kay Guy.
We would like to say a special thanks to Buckner Westminster Place - Dr. David Ummel, Dr. Rick Webb and their amazing staff in the Harbor. Special thanks to caregivers LaDonna, Alician, Heather, and Sabrina who loved her and cared for her as their own.
A celebration of Patsy’s life will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 11:00 am in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Longview. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Buckner Westminster Place, First Baptist Church, Longview Handbell Ministry, or First Baptist Church, Longview Garden Ministry.
