Rink was born in Old London on July 5, 1932. He was the son of Nolan Lafayette Field and Celia Agnes Field. He attended school at New London, where he was a football standout. He continued his academic career and played football at Kilgore College and Sam Houston State University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1952. That same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Jean Evers. After college, the couple moved to Longview, Texas, where they began their married life as teachers. Rink served 7 years as a vocational agriculture teacher at Judson High School before moving to the Longview ISD to serve as Director of Maintenance, and, later, as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Rink was retired from the Longview ISD for fourteen years. He was especially proud of his work supervising the design and building of the new Longview High School, which, when completed in 1976, won numerous design and educational awards.
In addition to his work in Longview schools, Rink left his mark on Longview in numerous ways. Among his community accomplishments were spearheading an effort to bring a municipal water district to the Judson community in which he lived, and being an active member of various organizations, including the Board of Directors of the Tryon Road Water District, Civil Defense trainer, the Armed Forces Draft Board, the Kidney Foundation, and the Longview Jaycees. He was a longtime member of the Henry Foster Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church of Longview.
A wide range of interests and a love of the outdoors enriched Rink?s life. Rink delighted in many activities that could be done there. As a boy, he spent many weekends on Caddo Lake and summers with his beloved aunts and uncles in Grosvenor and Bowie, Texas. He continued to enjoy football after graduation from college as a referee for junior high, high school, and university games. Rink also had a unique talent for raising and showing animals, and he was privileged to travel to the prestigious Houston and Fort Worth Fat Stock Shows, among others, to do so. He continued to hunt and fish throughout his life. He raised and trained bird dogs, and in his later years, traveled to sites far afield to fish and hunt, including Mexico, Sweden and Norway, Central and Southern Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, and Alaska. Rink also had a passion for horticulture and the care of flowers and plants. Everywhere he traveled, he brought home new specimens to add to his flower and vegetable gardens.
Mr. Field was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Elizabeth and Geraldine. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Evers Field of Longview; son, Cap Field, of Longview; daughter, Dr. Sherry Field, of Austin; son-in-law, Russ Hodes of Austin; brother in law and wife, Charles and Susie Evers of Carthage; sister in law, Sharon McCrary, of Austin; nieces Dawn Evers Zajicek, Laurie McCrary, Janie Scott; and Lynn Broeske; nephews, Chris Evers and John Scott; special cousins Mike, Carol, and Cole Danforth; Ethel Hill and Pearl Wagnon; career mentors, Dr. Charles F. Mathews and Doris McQueen; and his Swedish foreign exchange student ?grandson,? Jonas Spangberg.. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Sansom and his staff for the loving care they extended to Rink.
