I recollect from my early years, that my mother had a profound admiration for her sister, my Aunt Millieâ??s son, Nick. Nick was a known life saver and a prodigious swimmer. My own personal experiences with his exploits were limited; but, I have etched in my mind, the vision of Nick pulling a 300 foot seine out into the Gulf of Mexico when we had a family gathering on the western Galveston beach. I must have been about 10 or 11 years old then. Nick repeatedly pulled the heavy seine out into the water from the beach; and then, hauled it back, laden with all sorts of marine life. My minuscule job was to bash the small sharks on the beach and gather the other fish for placement into coolers.
Nick also proudly served our country in the Navy during the 1950â??s I believe. I also recall the fear and concern when our Aunt Millie and my mother, Anna heard the news that he had been injured while on duty on a naval vessel. There was great concern for his well-being; and fortunately, he was later found to recover without lingering affliction.
I also recall some portions of Nick and Jeriâ??s wedding. It was a grand event for all the family. Nick and Jeriâ??s family grew wonderfully over the years.
I enjoyed listening to Nick speaking, since he had such a distinctive and strong voice.
I always admired my cousin Nick, and really respected him and know that all will miss him very much in the world as we know it.
Knowing him has brought forth a positive effect on me and I valued him as a person whenever I thought about him.
We all WANT the departed to go to heaven and "be at peace" and trust that God makes that happen.
Nick is now in the hands of the one who INVENTED mercy. Our job now is just to pray for the departed to have the Grace to accept that mercy. We're ALL in need of mercy.
