Millie Harper's Obituary
Millie Harper
Mrs. Millie Harper, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, October 29, 2014, at Good Shepherd Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born on January 12, 1922 in Shreveport, Louisiana but to all who knew her, Longview, Texas was where she called home for over ninety years.
Millie resided at Summer Meadows Nursing Home for the last seven years. For many years, Millie had a ministry, Millie’s Ministry, which included mail sent and visits made to many people in the hospital or nursing homes. One of her greatest enjoyments was to serve as one of the “Pink Ladies” for Good Shepherd Medical Center for almost thirty years.
Millie graduated from Longview High School in 1939 were she was Lady Lobo #10 on the basketball team. After graduation, she attended Business College in Shreveport, came back to Longview and worked in the insurance business for over twenty-five years.
Millie’s family and friends knew her to be a compassionate person in many areas: her “Cornerstone” Sunday School class of First Christian Church, sporting events that involved her son and grandson as coaches, Good Shepherd Medical Center and her grandchildren. She was always an ambassador for the people and things she loved.
Millie is survived by two sons: James and Dyanne Harper of Shreveport, and Sid and Tommie Harper of Marshall. Grandchildren include Clint and Dana Harper of Marshall and Heather and Doug Dedrick of Grapevine. She is also survived by four adopted grandchildren: David, Steven, Kevin Cawthon and Shannon Cawthon Holt. One of her greatest joys was great-granddaughter Hope Harper. In addition, she is survived by two grandchildren Terri Ely and Bobby Harper.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Summer Meadows Nursing Home for making Millie’s home there enjoyable. A special thanks to East Wing nurses and aids who showed such compassion for our mother. Thanks to special friends, Marilyn Johnson and Bill Morman for being so faithful to visit weekly.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harper are set for 10 a.m. Friday morning, October 31, 2014, in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home, Longview, with visitation scheduled from 9 10 a.m. prior to the service on Friday.
A private graveside service will be held at Gum Springs Cemetery following the service.
