Mickie Whitworth Hand's Obituary
Mickie Whitworth Hand, age 87, was born November 6, 1938, in Jennings, Missouri, to Red and Zell Whitworth. She woke up in Heaven on February 24, 2026.
Mickie moved with her family to Longview, Texas in the 1940s after her father was called to work at Monsanto Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant in Karnack, Texas in support of the World War II effort. After living in South Longview for a decade, the Whitworth family was among the first to live on Lake Cherokee, where the family proudly participated in the land lottery that secured their property.
A 1956 graduate and proud Lobo, Mickie made history as the first female drum major of Longview High School. She went on to dedicate more than 30 years of service to Texas Eastman Chemical Company, beginning in the steno pool and through determination, intelligence, and strong work ethic, worked her way up to the position of Purchaser.
Mickie’s faith and servant’s heart guided her throughout her life. She served as Director of Girls in Action at Mobberly Baptist Church and volunteered faithfully with the church’s Prayer Line ministry. She was deeply involved in the revitalization of Southside Longview and gave generously of her time to many community efforts.
Her love for her community was evident through her service as co-founder of the Longview Girls Softball Association and her work with Meals on Wheels, the East Texas Women’s Shelter, and the Longview Thanksgiving Food Drive. She also had a keen interest in politics, running for City Council and serving in numerous Longview elections as a dedicated Poll Worker. In recognition of her many contributions, Mickie was honored as part of the inaugural group of Stars Over Longview.
Above all, Mickie loved the Lord and her family with all her heart and her family loved her as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Red and Zell Whitworth, and her sister, Patricia Wier Donaldson.
She is survived by her three children: Jimmy Hand and wife April of Homer, Louisiana; Angie Kline and husband Bob of Fort Worth, Texas; and Mary Roach and husband Randy of Whitehouse, Texas; seven grandchildren: Alexis Ayala (Daniel), Erica Kline, Kimberly Malcomb (Zach), Alex Kline, Emma Kannard, Katie Kannard, and Bradley Roach; four great-grandchildren; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
A family directed memorial service will be held Saturday, March 7, at 12:00 noon at Mobberly Baptist Church, Building B, Room 202 (The Parlor). A time of visitation will be one hour prior to the service starting at 11am.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Heights of Tyler and Angel Hands Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mickie’s name to Angel Hands Hospice and Palliative Care at 903-630-1001.
