I worked with Smitty at Swensen's and served as a basketball equipment manager with him at Pine Tree. I have very good memories of Smitty and a few funny stories. Once he asked Coach Ray if he and I could leave for a few minutes one morning to take his truck to a shop. I think he was having indoor/outdoor carpet installed in the bed of his blue Chevy with a bulldog hood ornament. Smitty asked me, can you drive a manual shift. I assured him I could, and he instructed me to follow him in Boogie's car (sorry Boogie!). All went well until we had to stop on Hwy 80 at Spur 63. There was enough of an incline to cause me to kill the car twice trying to get moving from a stop. I looked in front of me and saw Smitty's shoulders bouncing as he was laughing while watching me struggling in Boogie's car. He couldn't wait to give me a hard time.... "I thought you said you could drive a manual shift...." He was a great guy, and I'll never forget him.
Boogie and family - I am so sorry for your loss! My thoughts and prayers will be with you.
