Memorial services for Michael Mackey ?Mickey? Melton will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, at Alpine Presbyterian Church in Longview under the direction of Rader Funeral Home. A graveside service will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. at Alpine Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, April 12, from 5-7 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home. Mr. Melton died Saturday while working on his farm.
Mr. Melton was born February 10, 1955, to Grady Melton Jr. and Lou Ann Mackey Melton. After graduating from Longview High School in 1973, he attended Texas A&M University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1976. He has been employed at R. Lacy Services, Inc., for over 25 years.
Mickey served on numerous boards and was an avid volunteer. He lived to help others without ever asking for recognition. He served eight years on the Longview ISD School Board and was president from 1994-1996. He was named Longview High School Distinguished Alumnus in 2002. Mickey was active in the Longview Greggton Rotary Club, where he served as President from 2000-2001 and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He helped begin the Longview Race Relations Committee and was recognized in January at the Unity Awards. Mickey came from a long line of educators and was instrumental in founding the Longview ISD Foundation. He was also involved with work at Camp Gilmont, a Presbyterian camp. He was a lifelong member of Alpine Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder for many years. In addition, Mickey served on the board of the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.
Mr. Melton is survived by his wife of 32 years, Rebecca Jenkins Melton; daughter and son-in-law Ann Crews Melton and Ryan Warner of Boston; daughter and son-in-law Emily Mackey Melton Harris and Jess Harris of Frisco; and daughter Elizabeth Michael Melton of College Station. His first grandchild, Laney Elizabeth Harris, was born in March. He was preceded in death by his father, Grady Melton Jr.
