Melvin B. Pitts, Jr.'s Obituary
Melvin B. Pitts, Jr., age 79, currently of Lake O’ Pines and formerly of White Oak, Texas passed away at home with his loving family by his side June 16, 2015. He was born January 24, 1936 in Paris, AR to Melvin B. Pitts, Sr., and Irene Kimberly Pitts.
Growing up Melvin attended local schools in Paris, AR. In high school he started on the “A” team as a freshman playing both basketball and baseball. It was during the start of his junior year the family moved to Texas where he enrolled in Pine Tree School in Longview. After graduating from high school Melvin attended Kilgore College and LeTourneau and played baseball there.
Melvin married Della Ruth Alvey Pitts and they had two boys, Mackey and Michael. They lived in California and Hobbs NM then later returned to White Oak to raise their children.
Melvin was a devout Christian and loved going to church and gospel music. He loved community service and giving to those less fortunate. Melvin served on the school board, served as the White Oak Fire Chief and the Police Chief.
Melvin retired as a Safety Specialist from Fluor Daniel. He enjoyed cooking giant barbeque feasts for family and friends when he wasn’t fishing or deer hunting.
Those left to cherish Melvin’s memory is his loving wife, Della, sons Mackey Pitts and Karen and Michael Pitts and Chris of Lake O’ Pines, 2 grandchildren, Michealan Pitts and Mathew Pitts of Dallas, sister, Neva Lopez of Kilgore, sisters-in-law Virginia Pitts of Longview, Lois Settle of Gladewater, and Faye May of Longview, brother-in-law Jimmy Alvey and his wife June of White Oak, Special niece of Kilgore and family Connie Lingle Modisette and her husband Joe and their daughter Brook Hammrick.
Funeral services will be today, 10 am, at Rader Funeral Home in Longview. Interment will follow services at White Oak Cemetery.
