A private burial will be at Rosewood Park. The rosary will be said at 6 pm on Tuesday February 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with visitation to follow. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends after a brave battle with lung cancer.
Mary Westerman was born on Long Island, New York to Paul and Eileen McEwan. At 16, she moved to Houston with her family. Mary graduated from St. Agnes High School before attending The University of Texas. She married Don Hesler and together they had three daughters. They moved to Longview in 1977. She was actively involved with St. Mary’s parish and Junior League. After raising her girls, Mary opened East Texas Packaging and operated this business successfully for many years. In 2001, she married Carl Westerman. For the next 18 years they traveled, spent time at the Farm, and often enjoyed dining with friends and family. Carl and Mary looked forward to their Wednesday night dinner friends, and Mary treasured her Thursday morning coffee group. Mary’s generous heart and compassion were evident through her dedication to Meals on Wheels, Longview Community Ministries, and Highway 80 Rescue Mission.
Mary brightened any room she walked into with her beautiful eyes and warm smile. “There is nothing on this earth more prized than true friendship”; Mary was that true friend to so many.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Katie Hesler Helms and her sister Jeannie McEwan. She is survived by her spouse, Carl, daughters Alyson Espinoza-Diaz and husband Adrian and their children Gabriel and Lucy, Sarah Pemberton and her husband Brent and their son William, Dawne Tadlock and husband David and their children Sam and wife Justina, Katie and husband Sean, John and Anne, and Michelle Cook and husband Bruce and their children Gary and wife Amira, and Ashley and husband Kyle. Brothers PJ McEwan and wife Loren, Pete McEwan and sisters JoAnn McEwan, Pat Bonnell, Laura Dase and husband Sam. Mary is also survived by four nieces and nephews and four great grandchildren and countless friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Longview Community Ministries or the Highway 80 Mission.
