Mary Mildred Carden's Obituary
Funeral services for Mary Mildred Carden, 93, of Longview will be held 10 AM Wednesday, January 7th at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel, 1617 Judson Rd. with Rev. David Lindwall officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2 PM at the City Cemetery in Sulphur Springs. Mary passed away Monday, January 5, 2004 at her home in Longview.
Mary was born November 5, 1910 to Mildred Agee Carden and Hope Martin Carden in Belton, Texas. The family moved to Dallas, Terrell, and finally Sulphur Springs, where Mary graduated from Sulphur Springs High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Texas Teachers College in Commerce and a Master of Arts degree from North Texas State College in Denton, Texas. She was a member of Alpha Chi and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
Mary taught art to elementary students in the public schools of Sulphur Springs, Denison, and Dallas. For the majority of her teaching career, she taught art at the North Texas State College Laboratory School in Denton. During World War II, Mary was a member of the Waves in the United States Navy. She was a Link Trainer Instructor at Chase field in Beeville, Texas.
In 1989, she moved from Denton to Longview where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class, Self-Help for Hearing Impaired People SHHH, Waves Ago and Retired Teachers Association.
Mary had a great love and appreciation for the Arts. Her talents ranged from painting contemporary images to jewelry making and she continued to study art well into her retirement. For many years, she participated in archaeological field trips.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Dorothy June Carden Renfroe. She is survived by two sisters: Catherine Flewharty of Longview and Hope LaCombe of Forks, Washington; nephews and nieces: tom Flewharty of Tyler, Philip Flewharty of Harleton, Sarah Alice Davis of Longview, Robert Cherry of San Francisco, Wayne Cherry of San Diego, Hope Olson of Forks, WA, Andy Cherry of Carson City, NV and numerous great nieces and nephews.
The family extends special thanks to Heart to Heart, Peggy Nelson and LifeCare Hospice. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Longview.
