Marvin William Jones
Funeral services for Marvin William Jones, 85, of Longview will be held at Ten O'clock AM Friday May 21, 2010 at the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home 1617 Judson Road with Roger Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Mr. Jones passed away Monday May 17, 2010 in Longview.
He was born March 13, 1925 in Valley View, Cooke County, Texas to David Smith Jones and Rosie Elizabeth Buff Jones. At age 17 he went to work in the shipyards in California where learned the welding trade. In 1946 he volunteered and served in the Army Air Corp. On February 25, 1949 he and Mattie Belle Speaks from Cove, Arkansas were married in DeQueen, Arkansas. He followed the welding profession most of his life having worked at Trinity Industries in Longview. In 1990, he and his wife opened and operated Pine Tree Inspections in Longview until his health forced him to retire in 1999.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters, two brothers and triplet great-grandsons.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie, of 61 years, one daughter Rita Odom and husband Frank of Longview, two sons, Kenneth Jones and wife Rhonda of White Oak, Dennis Jones and wife Becky of Longview, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, also one brother Forest Jones of Idabel, OK, sister-in-law, Pearlene Gentry Jones of Ohio.
He loved his family and enjoyed creating crafts in his shop for the family reunions.
He has been an ordained deacon in the Southern Baptist Church since 1960.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday May 20, 2010 from 6-8pm.
Memorials may be made to Beacon Hospice, Gideons International or Fellowship Baptist Church.
