Margaret Moss Buckstaff's Obituary
Margaret Moss Buckstaff was born April 18, 1932 in Greenville, MS. to Jean Spivey Moss, of Hollandale, MS and Joe Russell Moss of Nevada, MO. At that time the family was living in Catarina, TX but soon moved to a sheep and cattle ranch 18 miles west of Uvalde, TX. With the beginning of the school years they moved to Uvalde where she graduated from Uvalde High School.
She attended Gulf Park College for Women for two years and then went to SMU where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She met George A. Buckstaff on campus and they were married July 10, 1954. After short stops in Chicago and Houston they moved to Longview in 1958.
Although she was active in social affairs, her lifetime was defined by her devotion to her children, Leslie Ann and Russell Moss, and her dedication to their activities and friends. She and George were on the board of the Longview Round-Up Club, she was active in the formation of Trinity Day School, served on its early board and participated in many activities of Trinity Episcopal Church.
As the kids grew older, she was active with The Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and the Texas State Library Talking Book Program. She made many friends at LISD PTA functions. Her home was always open to her children's friends. She and George enjoyed many weekends at Lake Cherokee with large groups of high school kids and a dog named Socrates.
She was active in the youth and swimming programs at the YMCA and served on the their board for many years, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, worked closely with their youth group, Children of the American Revolution, and volunteered for several years to deliver Meals-On-Wheels. She was a member of The Longview Junior League, The Green Thumb Garden Club and the Junior Literary Club. She loved her large yard full of flowers and was an accomplished flower arranger. Her house was always full of flowers, and she often found arrangements to give to friends.
In addition to her husband and children, she will be missed by her two grandchildren, Lindsay L. Buckstaff and Christopher R. Buckstaff, and many friends.
Memorial services will be 10 AM Friday, April 13, 2012 at Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Shanna Neff officiating under direction of Rader Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The Texas State Library, Talking Book Program, P.O. Box 12516, Austin, TX 78711-2516
