Services for Mabel Thompson Barclay Choate, 88, of Hallsville will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at the Hallsville First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Randy Hageman officiating. Burial will follow in Hallsville Cemetery under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
Mrs. Choate was born on September 17, 1914 in Kansas City, MO. to Dr. Seward Conrad and Beulah Thompson. She moved to Port Arthur at age 9 and was a 1932 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. She met and married Jack Barclay, Sr., and they moved to Nacogdoches in 1946 where she began working as District Manager for a cosmetic company. After Mr. Barclays death, she met Cecil Choate. They married and in 1947 and moved to Huntington where Cecil began his teaching career. In 1953, they moved to Carthage where she began work as a secretary for International Paper Co. They moved to Hallsville in 1963 and she founded the ?And Smile? Charm School. She later began work as a Librarian for the Hallsville Jr. High School, where she was instrumental in its revitalization.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Mrs. Choate was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Edith Jayne. She is survived by her husband, Herbert Cecil Choate of Hallsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Edith Jane and Howard Athey of Fort Worth, and Celia and Dr. Ken Carlile of Marshall; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Erskine, Jr. and Nan Barclay of Pasadena, and Keith and Marilyn Choate of San Antonio; grandchildren, Angela Jane Stephens, Byron Keith Barclay, Howard Anderson Athey, Hollis Thompson Barclay, Zachary Quinton Carlile, Cameron Choate Carlile, Tyler Matthew Choate, Reagan Kyle Choate, Carson Nathan Choate, and Tatum Amanda Choate; great grandchildren, Caroline Stephens, Barclay Stephens, Megan Barclay, Brooks Barclay, Anderson Barclay, Holly Barclay, Preston Barclay, Sarah Athey, Natalie Athey, Virginia Grace Carlile, and Kenneth Quinton Carlile, II; and niece, Dr. Pamela Etchison.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday evening, September 16, 2003 at the funeral home.
