Lt. Col. Lee D. Steger, USAF Ret.
Services for Lee Douglass Steger will be held Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Greggton United Methodist Church with the Reverends Doug Wintermute and Dow Harleston officiating.  Burial will follow at Rosewood Park with full military honors under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
Col. Steger was born September 7, 1923 in Daisetta TX to the late Etra Jean Lee and Edward H. Steger.  He passed away October 4.
He was a 1940 graduate of Leverett's Chapel High School.  After one year of Kilgore Jr. College, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps and received his pilot wings in June of 1944.  In 1945, he returned to civilian life.  He re-entered college in 1947 and received a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M in 1950.  He completed his master's degree in 1951, and was recalled to active duty in the Air Force in 1952.  He was a Special Agent for Inspector General, Headquarters, USAF for 18 years, retiring as a Lt. Col. In 1970.  He served his country for 28 years during WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam War with duty in the U.S., Okinawa and Germany.
After retiring from the Air Force, he taught for the Pine Tree Independent School District for 15 years.  Following his teaching career, he and his wife Helen traveled extensively.
Lee was a member of Greggton United Methodist Church and a member of Welmaker-Joy Class for over 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Helen Dye Steger; a daughter Lee Ann Risner and her husband Jackie of Nacogdoches; a son Douglass Edward Steger and his wife Judy of Union Grove; and four granddaughters, Amy Dee Key, Kayla Lee Risner, Sara Beth Risner and Rebekah Lee Steger; a great grandson Steven Zane Key.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Welmaker-Joy Class.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family wished to thank Dr. Schottstaedt, Dr. Holder and Dr. Archer and the caring staff at Margaret's House for their loving care.
