Larry Douglas Pickering's Obituary
Larry Douglas Pickering, Sr, also known as Pick, 70, of Longview, Texas passed away on May 6, 2019 at Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, following a brief illness.
He was born in Overton, Texas on April 30, 1949. Larry attended school at Gaston/West Rusk in New London and Kilgore College. While in high school and college, Larry was an outstanding baritone player in the West Rusk and Kilgore College marching bands, participating twice in the New York Macy’s Day Parade.
He was raised in Turnertown, Texas, where as a young boy he loved fishing, hunting, running the back roads, and spying on his older sister Frances when she brought her dates home, and generally harassing his little sister, Patricia whenever possible. Following in the footsteps of his dad, Larry had a lifelong career in the oilfield. He loved fishing with his dad, his brother Tom, and his son Lance. He also loved spending outdoor time with his son, Doug with whom he shared a passion for motorcycles. Larry was extremely witty and you could not be in a room with him without breaking up in laughter. Larry loved his family, his friends, and his church, but most of all he loved our Lord Jesus Christ.
Larry had a huge heart for those who were in shelters or disabled. He led ministries that oversaw cooking, worship and preaching at Highway 80 Rescue Mission. He also led ministries to Truman Smith in Gladewater, prisons, for boys of single mothers, and was a significant member of mission trips to Mexico from 2006-2008.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward and Betty Jane Pickering, two brothers, Johnny Pickering Jr., Tom Pickering, and a grandson, Seth McGee.
Larry is survived by his wife, Robyn Rowden Pickering of Longview; his sons, Doug Pickering and wife Kari, of Longview, and Lance Pickering and Savannah McFadden of Kilgore; Robyn’s children Mandi McGee and husband Mark of Clinton, Mississippi, Meagan Beshears and husband Jasen of Longview, Mallory Edmonds of Daingerfield, and Mason Mehrens of Longview; his sisters Frances Pence and husband Bob, of Tyler, and Trisha Roberson and husband Tommy of Mart; grandchildren Davis Pickering, Ren Pickering, Sean and Dylan McGee, Emma Watts, Claire and Wyatt Beshears, Zoe and Gavin Edmonds, Maggie, Keegan and Ethan Mehrens; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ who will miss him dearly.
A visitation will be held Friday, May 10 at New Covenant Church North Campus in Longview, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral service will also be held at New Covenant Church North Campus in Longview on Saturday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m., with Pastors Paul Klewer and Mike Park officiating.
