Laquita Jan Rogers' Obituary
Laquita Jan Rogers, 82, went home to heaven surrounded by her loving family on January 2, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Laquita Jan Callaway to Ancel and Viola Callaway of Petrolia, Texas, on August 22, 1940, and had 11 siblings. She married her sweetheart, Dan Rogers, on June 10, 1960. They celebrated 62 years of marriage and a lifetime of love this past year.
She earned a Bachelor of Education degree from East Texas Baptist University and her Master of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. She taught English in Marshall and for Longview ISD at JL Everhart Elementary, Jodie McClure Elementary and Forest Park Middle School, retiring after 29 years of growing young minds and serving her students well.
A member of Mobberly Baptist Church for many years, she faithfully sang in the choir and served as a children’s Sunday school teacher and Girls in Action leader, worked tirelessly in the church library, led women’s Bible studies, and provided leadership for the women’s ministry. She served her church and the Lord boundlessly and with great joy. Laquita also loved to read, travel and cook; she was well-known for her delicious coconut cream pies!
She was a devoted and caring mother to her children, Kim, Danny, and Joy, and “Gran” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From the family into which she was born to the family she created with Dan, she poured herself into all of them and was most fulfilled when surrounded by those she loved. Laquita, or “Skeeter”, as Dan called her, was a faithful and loving wife to her beloved husband and partner in life. In her last years, she was most comforted in the constant presence of Dan and often stated about him, “I am so blessed; He is so good to me.”
Laquita was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Jessie Dixie Callaway, Ancel Callaway Jr., Carolyn Chapin, Wansfel Callaway, Ish Callaway, and Rex Callaway.
She is survived by her husband, Dan; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Bruce Greer of Flower Mound; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sheila Rogers of Kilgore; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Trey Cook of Waxahachie; grandchildren Gavin Greer and wife Melanie, Mitchell Greer and wife Katherine, Preston Greer and Tatum Thomas, Corbin Greer and wife Kate, Bailey Grey, Branson Rogers and wife Nicole, Lara Zahn and husband Dustin, Patrick Simmons and wife Hannah, Elizabeth Cook, Emma Cook, Jackson Cook and 13 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by sisters, LaRue Hawkins, Renee Sternadel; brothers, Michael Callaway, Tim Callaway, and Ronnie Callaway; beloved sisters- and brothers-in-law; and many nephews and neices.
A private family celebration service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023. The family wishes memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Laquita’s name.
