Kathy has been my best friend since the fourth grade. Though she was a self-proclaimed “daddy’s girl “, she had an even closer relationship with her mother who passed Kathy her extraordinary wisdom.
As kids, we would occasionally lay out in the sun….oh, yes, with baby oil, “tanning it up”! Even then, she always had a kind word and smile for everyone! Throughout life, we always found time to laugh and “cut up”. I can hear her infectious laughter even now! She had a way with words; direct, practical, and often funny! I recall her picking me up for high school in her “tennis shoe”, often going for donuts and her famous Dr. Pepper first! Once, she laughingly told me, “Stick with me Mel. I’ll have you in diamonds!” Hahaha! Whether I knew it at the time or not, Kathy’s love of life and humor affected my choice of spouse and my outlook on life, giving me strength to forge ahead, when life was difficult.
Kathy enjoyed cooking and made some great country dishes and breakfasts. My favorite memory was learning to make homemade biscuits. “The Secret is in the cast iron skillet, Mel!”!
Kathy was always proud of her family. She chose wisely in her beloved husband,Thomas. Their love is boundless and eternal. When God made Kathy’s daughter, Tiffoney (and then her granddaughter Emma), He must have been very pleased with Kathy, because He created near replicas! Beautiful Tiff was the apple of Kathy’s eye and I know they shared an extra special bond. I know this because I heard about all of Tiff’s milestones and enjoyed every minute of it! Then there’s her son, Dustin. He was always so cute and born to be active! I often heard from her about all his new antics and jokes. Yes, she was very proud of her family….And her Cadillacs…plus, the fact that they were gifts from Thomas. Their love was, indeed priceless! Over the years, I was always amazed how perfectly she managed her hair, makeup, and nails. I think she started that trend, lol! I also swear she also coined the term “date nite”, always eager to spend more time with Thomas! These things, and many more, set a fabulous example (and a high bar) for her children, extended family, and friends!
I am truly blessed and grateful to have had her in my life. If I had to pick one word to describe her, it would be LOVE. Though my memories of her will always be with me, there will now be a Kathy-sized hole in my heart. Rest in peace, my dear friend. I see you hugging your mother now. You’ll always be missed and never forgotten!
