Julius Marvin Sherrell's Obituary
Obituary for Julius Marvin Sherrell
Julius Marvin Sherrell, 94, of Longview, passed away on February 25, 2023 after a brief illness.
Julius was born on March 13, 1928, to Harlen and Rachel Sherrell in Covington, Ok. After Julius graduated from White Oak High School in 1946, he joined the United States Army Air Force where he served honorably in the Philippine Islands as an Air Traffic Controller and was discharged from the United States Air Force in 1947.
After discharging from the United States Air Force, he started his first job at Jewell Tea. He later went on to become a top salesman with the Standard Coffee Company serving East Texas for many years. After leaving Standard Coffee, he joined his brother-in-law, Maynard Emerson at T&N Railroad in Lone Star, where he stayed until he accepted a position with the United States Postal Service. Julius delivered the mail, walking his route daily, for the Postal Service until he retired in 1986 as a letter carrier with 20 years of service.
In 1961, Julius met the love of his life, Joanne Avis at the Bramlette Building in downtown Longview. This was truly love at first site and they were married on April 29, 1961. Although they never had children, they greatly loved their nieces and nephews as their own.
In 1986, Julius retired and spent his time traveling with his true best friend, Joanne. They visited places such as Hawaii, Las Vegas, Florida, Michigan and numerous National Parks across the country. He enjoyed playing the Honey Bee slot machines and having cookout’s with family. His childhood stories with brothers Dean and Hubert in the Sabine River Bottoms in White Oak were some of his favorite memories to tell everyone during family gatherings. Julius took great pride and pleasure in being “the big brother” to his tribe of brothers and sisters.
Julius was preceded in death by his wife Joanne; his parents; and his sisters, Velma, Irene and Margie. He is survived by his brothers, Dean Sherrell and his wife Linda and Hubert Sherrell and his wife Nancy; his sisters, Mary Emerson and Arlene Hicks; several generations of nephews and nieces; and many close friends he considered family.
Graveside services will be held at Rosewood Park Cemetery Mausoleum at 2pm Friday, March 3, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Lutheran Church of Longview.
Pallbearers will be Jon Sherrell, Brian Mitchell, Zackery Carter, Cody Tackett, Carter Tackett, Mitchell Carter, Dustin Hodges and David Carter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Emerson, Josh Emerson, Matt Emerson, Matt Sherrell, Drew Sherrell, Jack Sherrell and Michael Hicks
