Gene and my husband, Bill, were good friends while Bill was alive. He spoke at my husband’s funeral. He also officiated at my daughter’s wedding. We enjoyed several trips with Gene and Shirley. I am saddened to learn of his death, but will be praying for Shirley and the girls.
My deepest sympathies go out to Shirley and the Petty family and extended family. I will always remember Gene fondly as a wonderful Bible teacher with a great sense of humor. I remember him also as a counselor and as a devoted family man. May Our Heavenly Father hold those close in His Arms that mourn losing Gene. Also, may they celebrate his graduation to Heaven knowing that reunification with him will come some day.
Dr. Petty was a great man.

Well You will be missed alot, you were a great uncle. Can remember going to yall's big 2 story house. And going to churh where you preached. I know mom is happy to be with you. My prayers and thoughts are with you Aunt Shirley & girls. Heaven gained a great one.
Dr. Petty married my wife and I 49 yrs ago at Oakland Heights Baptist Church. Cathy ran into him several years ago and she mentioned that we just celebrated our anniversary, whatever year, and he just smiled and said...I must have done a pretty good job. He always was such a kind and pleasant man.
A wonderful Uncle that will be missed but never forgotten. A true and devout family man who loved and served God. Our memories of the times spent with him and his family while growing up bring joy to my heart and a smile to my face.
