Joyce D'Alva Cashell's Obituary
Joyce D’Alva Mullican Cashell, of Longview, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 9 at her home surrounded by family. Joyce was a loving and devoted friend, mother, and wife who cared for all neighborhood animals, fed entire migrations of birds, and loved to send cards and thoughtful gifts to everyone she knew.
Joyce was born July 7, 1934 in Houston to William C. and Jessie Mullican and graduated from high school in Edgewood, Texas. She attended Lon Morris Junior College, Texas State College for Women, and completed graduate work at the University of Houston and East Texas State University. This later became Texas A&M University at Commerce and obtaining her own A&M diploma lessened her disappointment that her children did not become Aggies as the good Lord intended. Joyce served as a speech-language pathologist and supervisor for 34 years in public schools in Odessa, Spring Branch, Mesquite, Longview, and in Central Texas. She was a consultant for several regional education service centers and worked for Sundance Rehabilitation Services until her retirement in 1999. She served as an officer on the Texas Council of Administrators in Special Education, the Texas Council for Exceptional Children, the Texas Speech and Hearing Association, and the Texas Association for Children with Learning Disabilities.
Joyce married the love of her life, Fox Hughes Cashell, on February 16, 1963. Both were educators with a love for travel and only argued when dad made them stop at every historical marker on the way. They had a wonderful marriage and three children. Family was everything to Joyce and her love and protection for her loved ones was unconditional. Joyce was preceded in death by her mother and father, husband, sister, and brothers-in-law Jimmy and Charles Cashell. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Fox Cashell Jr. and Ruthanna Cashell, James Cashell and Jennifer Glasscock, and Michael Cashell and Tammy Ware; three grandsons, James Cashell Jr., Fox Jordan Cashell, and Josh Hinson; two grand-daughters Jessie Hinson and Jennifer Ellis; sister-in-law Ann Cashell Christie; brother-in-law Bob Cashell and wife Nancy; cousins Ronald Reeves, Brenda Moore, Mike Tate, and Cassie Simmons; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Also left to cherish her memory is “Mini-Mouse”, her beloved dog and constant companion.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, December 14, from 5-7 PM at Rader Funeral Home at 1617 Judson Road in Longview. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 2 PM, officiated by Pastor Monty Sanders. A graveside ceremony will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are James Cashell, Jr., Joshua Hinson, Clay Hamilton, Jay Hamilton, Clark Penn, and John Northcutt.
