Dad was a man whose love and generosity knew no limits. He was always there for Esther and me, no matter the time or distance. I remember one night, stranded miles from home with a flat tire, he didn’t hesitate to come to our aid, late as it was. That’s just the type of person he was, steadfast and reliable, always willing to go the extra mile, no matter how tired he was. He treated me not as an outsider but as a son, welcoming me into the family with open arms and an open heart. Refugio made time for everyone, always putting family first. His generosity and warmth touched everyone he met, leaving a legacy of love and kindness that we’ll forever cherish. We will miss him more than words can express, from his unwavering support to the way he made everyone feel seen and valued. His spirit will forever remain in our hearts, guiding us with the same love and generosity he showed to all.
Abuelo had a story ready for any question I had. When I asked him about his childhood, he would giggle as he reminisced running around the campo with his cousins, hunting small birds, pranking his tĂas, and laugh until tears streamed from his eyes when he remembered racing with his cousins to flee an angry beehive they had disturbed with sticks.
These stories created an image different to the bald, bespectacled grandfather I had grown up with, another layer of a mischievous soul who reminded me of misadventures with my own primos around Aunt Maria and Uncle Frank's sprawling farm.
Abuelo's sharp mind, agile feet, and youthful energy filled his dances with abuela with a certain chispa that I see passed on through his children and grandchildren: it looks like a toothy smile, playful banter, and belly laughs late into the night.
Cuco's chispa burns within each of us as his descendants and I know it would bring him joy knowing we will continue cultivating that vibrant chispa each time we come together as his living legacy. Te amo Abuelo đź’ś
