I met John when I was a little boy. He was on patrol and pulled over my mother for speeding on (a then two-lane) Judson Road. For whatever reason, it scared me and I reacted accordingly. After that shift, John showed up at our home to make sure I was OK; he gave me a balsa wood model glider as a gesture of goodwill. The rest is history. Sgt. Thompson leaves a legacy of excellence, professionalism and all-around kindness. I was fortunate enough to meet up with him several years ago when I was a Longview News-Journal reporter and he as a court bailiff. He remembered well that incident from years before and told me that it helped shape his policing focus. I am beyond blessed that Mom decided to travel 52 in a 40 on that summer day. Thank you, Sgt. Thompson, for leaving such wonderful footprints.
