John Paul Painter's Obituary
Mass of Christian Burial, for John Paul Painter, 89, of Longview, will be 12 Noon Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Mark Dunn and Father Bruce Lincon officiating.
Interment will follow in Grace Hill Cemetery.
The Family will greet friends Monday from 6 to 8 PM at Rader Funeral Home, Longview.
The rosary will be recited at 11:30 AM Wednesday at St. Anthony.
Mr. Painter passed away Sunday morning in a local hospital.
Mr. Painter was born July 18, 1915 in West Mountain, TX, son of Frank Painter and Kate O?Byrne Painter. He graduated from Longview High School in 1932 where he was quarterback of the 1931 District 7 championship team of the Longview High School Lobos.
He received a B. S. from St. Edwards University, Austin, TX and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating, Mr. Painter returned to Longview to practice law as Assistant District Attorney of Gregg County. He purchased Central Abstract & Title Company before being called to serve in the US Army in the Euro-pean theater of WWII from 1941-1946 attaining a rank of Major. He returned to Longview to own and manage Central Abstract & Title Company.
After the sale of Central Title Co., he practiced law in private practice and served as counsel to First Federal Savings & Loan. He served on the Longview City Commission and served as President, Chairman or in various capacities of Longview Chamber of Commerce, Junior Service League, Longview Community Theatre, American Heart Association, Red Cross, etc. He was a life-long member of St. Anthony?s Catholic Church where he served as Chairman of the Op-erations Committee for over 20 years and as a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and Chairman of the Building Committee of St. Mary?s School. He served three times as President and Board Member of Pinecrest Country Club. He was a member and coun-sel of Cherokee Club of Longview and twice named ?Boss of the Year? by the ABWA in 1973-74.
He was preceded in death by Cathrene Hall Painter. He is survived by wife Joan McCarthy Painter, children John Paul Painter II and wife Vivian of Arlington, Cathy Painter Cace and husband Gerard of Longview and step daughter Jamie Fuller of Longview. Five granddaughters Shannon Painter, Erin Painter & Brooke Hopp of Arlington; Jennifer Cace and Chelsea Cace of Longview and one great grandson Griffin of Arlington.
