John Harris Erwin, Jr.
Funeral services for John Harris Erwin, Jr., 90, of Gilmer, formerly of Longview will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Enon Baptist Church, Gilmer with The Reverends Ray Thompson, Wayne McKay and Ken Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Park under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. He passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009 in a Longview hospital.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Erwin was born January 4, 1919 in the Soules Chapel Community to John Harris and Ada Simpson Erwin. He attended school in Soules Chapel, Union Hill and finished in Gilmer. He was a retired welding supervisor for Texas Eastman and a U. S. Air Force veteran of WWII. Mr. Erwin enjoyed fishing, golf and gardening. He also enjoyed traveling, gospel singing and gathering at the family farm. He was a member of Enon Baptist Church and the Danville Masonic Lodge #101.
Mr. Erwin was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Corine Walker Erwin; and his brother, Jack Dan Erwin.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Montie Erwin of Gilmer; sister, Vera Nell Davis of Dallas; brothers, Max Glen Erwin of Shreveport, Thomas Simpson Erwin of Gilmer and Dick Kent Erwin of Italy, TX; stepchildren, Ron and Cullene South of Gilmer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorial and Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105-1905.
