John R. Dunaway's Obituary
John Ronell Dunaway peacefully passed away Saturday morning, June 7, 2014 after an extended illness. Johnny, as he was known by his family and longtime friends, was born in Panhandle, Texas on July 10,1926, the youngest child of J.R. and Mayme Dunaway. His family moved to Longview when he was three years old. He excelled in athletics and played football at Longview High School. Later, he attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri and then Baylor University. He loved the outdoors, and one favorite hobby during his younger years was racing boats. He loved hunting, fishing and camping with his four children and friends. He and his wife of 31 years, Peggy, enjoyed traveling the world and motor-homing across North America.
After college, John started working in the oilfields of Texas. Later, in the mid 1950s he started Dunaway Manufacturing Company, an innovator of aluminum windows, which continued until the early 1980s. Finally, he operated a wholesale building material business until his retirement in 2000.
Those left to cherish his memory are his: two sons, John M. Dunaway and Jim Dunaway and his wife Donna; daughter, Carol Guess; daughter-in-law, Susan Dunaway – all of Longview; step-son, Mike Boone and his wife Elaine – of Kingwood, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his: parents, J.R. ‘Jack’ and Mayme Dunaway; brother, James R. Dunaway, Jr.; sister, Edna Moser; wife, Peggy Watson Dunaway; step-son, Ted Boone, Jr.; son, Rob Dunaway; granddaughter, Karen Guess Crisswell.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Tuesday at the Chapel of Radar Funeral Home in Longview with Minister Glenn Cogburn officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Cemetery under the direction of Rader Funeral Home.
