Joe Clifton Burks, 68, of Houma, Louisiana, passed away May 8, 2024, in White Oak, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday May 18, 2024, in the historical Danville Cemetery in Kilgore, Texas.
Joe was born on March 10, 1956, to Billy Joe and Betty Burks in Gregg County and was named after his 2 grandfathers Joe Browning Burks and John Clifton Powell. Joe attended Hallsville Schools and graduated in 1974. After high school Joe joined the U.S. Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Queenfish SSN 651 submarine. Joe was an expert in the kitchen and spent many years cooking up delicious meals for the masses in restaurants, offshore rigs, and oilfield catering companies. He ultimately retired after travelling the U.S.A. driving an advertising truck. In different seasons of his life he called Lufkin, Texas; White Oak, Texas; and Houma, Louisiana home. Joe liked to fish, play dice and 42 dominoes.
Joe had 8 brothers and one sister. He is survived by his godson: John Pierre Chauvin; brothers: Johnny Sadler, Roy Herndon, Jason Herndon, Bruce Burks, David Burks, and Doug Burks; and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather Betty and Lee Roy Herndon, his father and stepmother Billy Joe and Nancy Burks, his brothers Kelly Burks & Jimmy Herndon, and his sister Debra Burks Duke.
