Joan Hendricks' Obituary
Joan Irene Clanton Hendricks
1934-2025
“Think of me from time to time.” – Joan Hendricks
Joan Irene Clanton Hendricks, 90, of Leander, Texas, passed away on January 22,
2025. She was born and grew up in Kannapolis, North Carolina in 1934 to Lois and Arvil
Clanton. As a child, she enjoyed spending time with her three sisters, Frances, Ruby,
and Fay, helping her mother in the garden, and playing in their workshop.
Joan went to college at Freed-Hardeman in Henderson, Tennessee where she met the
love of her life, Roger, at the Snack Shop. Her beautiful black hair and sharp intellect
captivated Roger and they soon wed on December 23, 1954. They celebrated 70 years
of marriage last December.
Joan’s life was further blessed by her four children, Dale, Timothy, Donna, and Anita.
Joan’s children meant the world to her, and she took great pride in raising each of them.
Motherhood truly was her greatest joy.
That joy was furthered with the addition of each of her six grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren. She adored her role as ‘Granny’ and made sure her grandkids and great
grandkids never left her home with empty hands or empty hearts.
Outside of her family life, Joan was a loyal friend and devoted Christian who cherished
the Bible and teachings of Jesus. She attended Northwest Church of Christ in Austin,
TX, and took solace in knowing the Lord was watching over her.
She was also an avid crafter who could make just about anything and an enthusiastic
thrift shopper. Those close to her will never forget the thrill and apprehensive
anticipation of opening one of her infamous “Garage Sale Granny” gifts.
Joan will always be remembered for her generosity and loving spirit. Memories and
legacy were extremely important to her. She held on to almost everything because it
held a memory; or she freely gave things away with the eternal hope of creating a
memory for someone else.
That is Joan’s legacy. Her ever-consistent mission to create beautiful memories for her
loved ones to cherish will live on in her name. The pictures she insisted on making, the
gifts she insisted on giving, the late-night talks, the long phone calls, the visits that
lasted longer than planned, they have all left their mark. And for those of us fortunate
enough to have been a part of her beautiful life, she would want nothing more than for
us to stop every now and then to, as she would say:
“Think of me from time to time.”
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances and Fay,
her daughter-in-law, Anna-Kay Hendricks, and her grandson, Cary Hendricks. She is
survived by her husband, Roger Hendricks, her sister, Ruby Gehrke, her niece, Anne
Gehrke, her nephew John Gehrke, her children and their spouses: Dale and Judy
Hendricks, Timothy Hendricks, Donna and Stewart Coffman, and Anita Kerr; her
grandchildren and their spouses: Chad and Laurie Hendricks, Holly and Christopher
Peters, Lacey and Zach Fisk, Cassidy Coffman, and Caleb Coffman; and her great-
grandchildren: Ryan Hendricks, Matthew Hendricks, Braddock Peters, Anabelle Fisk,
and Hailey Fisk.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 1 at 3:00pm at Rosewood Park
Cemetery in Longview, Texas.
