Dr. Jerry Dewayne McLaughlin II's Obituary
Dr. Jerry Dewayne McLaughlin II was born on November 22, 1964 to Jerry and Penny McLaughlin. He was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas. His parents raised him with a beautiful faith at home and at Elgin Avenue Baptist Church, where he made the decision to follow Christ and was baptized at age six. He attended Bayless Elementary and Atkins Junior High before going on to graduate from Monterey High School, where he was given the honor and distinction of being named "Mr. Monterey."
Recognition of his commitment to his excellence, his passion and his generosity would continue throughout his life. He graduated with high honors from Texas Tech University with a BA in Chemistry and went on to graduate from the University of Texas Health Science Center At Houston Medical School. His residency was at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at UMC in Lubbock, Texas. He began his career in Obstetrics and Gynecology with Covenant Medical Group in Hobbs, New Mexico in 1995. He would complete his career with Zeid Women’s Health Center in Longview, Texas.
Dr. McLaughlin would practice medicine for the remainder of his life, delivering over six thousand babies and touching countless lives. He served as the New Mexico Medical Association president from 2009 to 2010, and was active in both the New Mexico Medical Association and the Texas Medical Association throughout his career. He also served as a delegate to the American Medical Association for both states during national conferences.
He brought warmth and joy to his practice, and led his field with a servant’s heart. His Christian faith illuminated his path throughout his life, and he faithfully showcased the gospel in all that he did and with everyone that he met.
Jerry loved his work but the joy of his life was his family. He celebrated 28 years of strong, happy marriage and fulfilling family life. He continued his commitment to building a strong spiritual heritage in his children. He considered his children among his favorite company, enjoying daily chats with them after they were grown and away from home.
Dr. McLaughlin is survived by his wife, Sundi, and two children, Mykel Jerry and Melody, as well as his mother Penny McLaughlin, his sister Sharla McLaughlin Campbell, her husband Roger Campbell, his niece Sammi Campbell, and his nephew Roger Weston Campbell -- as well as his beloved family by marriage, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. His memory will continue to inspire all of us to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with [our] God” (Micah 6:8).
His family, friends, colleagues and patients will miss him greatly, yet we celebrate the assurance of seeing him again, as we know he is in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
In lieu of flowers, the family is setting up a Dr. Jerry McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Medical School. To give to the Dr. Jerry McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship fund please make arrangements through People’s Bank of Lubbock, 806-794-0044
