I worked with Jimmy for several years and always found him to be a caring and great man of God. He will be missed by all who came into contact with him and especially his loving family.

Jimmie,
We were so sorry to learn about the passing of Jimmy, who was a positive Christian influence on all those whose lives he touched. He quietly guided and led others to be the best they could be. Ours thoughts and prayers go out to you and to every member of the family at this very difficult time. May God bless each one of you.

My Velvin was my scoutmaster at Oakland Height Baptist Church when I was child growing up in Longview. He was a caring & wondeful man. He had a great influence on my life. I remember going on boy scout campouts, & hiking at the Vicksburg National Park. I learned so much about the civil war battlegrounds. I have one memory where Mr. Velvin helped me on a hiking trip. I have a fear of heights. Mr. Velvin helped me get across a train bridge by having me hold on the belt loops on his scout uniform. I also remember Mr. Velvin's son who was also in our boy scout troop. Mr. Velvin was my best scout master..
Jimmy was a great guy...a friend to all. I provided pest control at the moving business.
Phil & I had the privilege of getting to know Mr. Velvin in the mid-80's. He "fathered" and taught a bunch of us newly weds in Sunday School. Through his warmth and love, he created a strong bond & sense of family amongst our young bunch. He was the best!
Although we left Longview after only a few years, I have often thought of Mr. Velvin. He has and always will hold a special place in my heart. Mr. Velvin lived out what it means to love Jesus. I am thankful today to remember a man whose example encourages and inspires me!
With love & prayers,
Margaret Davis
To the family, all my prayers and sympathy for your loss. I have a special place in my heart for Mr. Velvin because he cared enough about a little girl to pick me up and take me to Sunday School. Due to that kindness I came to know Jesus as my Savior and have been in church from that point in my life until now. God bless this man's life, thank you for sharing him with me on Sundays all those many years ago!
