I have known "Sutt" my entire life. My dad, John Grimes, would tell stories of the two of them as young boys. We loved hearing about their fishing trips or the boys singing together in a quartet when they were young. My dad had several photographs of Sutt. I especially remember one of my Dad and Sutt in their navy uniforms. He wore the same big smile in the photo that I saw on his face nearly every time I ran into him. His cheerfulness was contagious. Then, there were the many times Sutt came by Dad's house. Often, his lovely wife, Iona, was with him. He was such a good friend to Dad. In later life, Sutt would come by to check on Dad, and when he saw me, Sutt always told me how much he loved my dad. My dad was blessed to have such a wonderful life-long friend, and as a result, we were blessed, also. Rest in peace, James Sutton, in the presence of God and your loved ones.

My father, John Grimes, and Sutt were very close friends before and after WWII. They were both Navy veterans. They were active at Mobberly Baptist Church and both sang in quartets. They used to share so many stories of their younger days, camping and fishing on Saturday nights and having to slip into church late on Sunday morning. Sutt led the music a few times at one of the local churches my father pastored in his later years of ministry and always sang beautifully. We loved seeing him wherever he worked including the hardware store where he worked until a few years ago. I know that Sutt and Iona are dancing again in Heaven and my dad and Sutt are rejoicing in their Heavenly reunion. How I would love to see that! We loved Sutt and he will always hold a special place in our hearts! What a dear, sweet and hardworking man he was! Sending our deepest condolences, Linda Grimes Miller and Wayne Miller
My father, John L. Grimes and “Sut” (because that is how I always knew him) were best of friends in their younger years. As a little girl I remember my Dad and Sut being together and there were always smiles and laughter. They had a deep love and respect for each other. Distance separated them in the later years and my Dad was unable to communicate after suffering a stroke but I do know that Sut was welcomed in Heaven by Iona and my dad, John Grimes and they are having a joyous celebration. My condolences to Mickey and Teresa during this time of loss but pray they feel God’s blessings in knowing Sut was welcomed home in Heaven as one of God’s Children.

Mickey, I
I am saddened by the passing of your father. There are too many fond memories I have of your family that I could share with you but there is not enough space in this tribute box.
Since 1956/57, first me then later my sister, Nancy, and my brother, Joey, called your grandmother’s house our second home. I remember your dad and sometimes Barney coming in the door at lunchtime.
Your Aunt Nancy will always be endeared as “Big Nancy”. And, my brother still checks in on her. When you see Big Nancy, give her a big hug for me.
Mrs. Parker’s dogs were always a joy. Maybe she is the reason we three kids, to this day, have dogs many dogs (my 5 I call “Parker’s Legacy”).
Often I remember Parker, Sexton, Aunt Sallie, Imogene, James, and Barney in my prayers. My mother, Nancy, Joey and I mention them in conversation with love on every.
I live near Galveston and Longview is a long drive for me to make. But know my prayers are with you and your family.
You are so blessed.
