James S. Witt
Memorial services for James S. Witt, 92, of Longview, will be held at 4 PM Monday, January 5, 2004 in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview with the Reverend Kevin Wittmayer, and Verger John C. Murphy officiating. He died Friday, January 2, 2004 in Longview.
Mr. Witt was born in Morristown, Tennessee on April 9, 1911 to Lucy Taylor Witt and Wilson Witt.
He attended Morristown schools and the University of Tennessee. He began his career of 32 years with Eastman Kodak Nov. 1, 1943 at Oak Ridge, Tennessee on the Manhattan Project.
Before joining Eastman, he was vice president of Hamilton National Bank of Morristown. In 1947, he moved to Kingsport, Tennessee as payroll tax accountant. He was transferred to Texas Eastman in Longview in March 1950. He served with distinction, being appointed treasurer in 1966. He continued in that position until his retirement, May 1, 1976.
Mr. Witt was active in many business and civic affairs. He was a life member and former vice president of the Texas Manufacturers Association. He served as a member of the Longview City Commission from 1959 to 1969, and was Mayor of the city of Longview in 1967 and 1968.
Mr. Witt was a director of the Greater Longview United Fund. He was on the advisory board of the Salvation Army and was also active with the Red Cross, Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations. He served as a director and treasurer of Pinecrest Country Club.
Mr. Witt was an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church.
Jeanne Witt Anderson, his daughter, preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted wife Anna C. Witt, and his grandchildren, Sherry M. Lee and her husband Dr. David Lee of Millersville, Maryland, and their sons Jonathan and Jeremy Lee; Charles McClendon and his son Nicholas of Los Angeles, California; James McClendon and his wife Wendy and son Kennedy James McClendon of Henderson, Nevada.
Mr. Witt?s extended family includes Marcia and Tom Walton of Arlington, Texas and their children Karen and Trey; David and Cindi Lockett and their children Ann and Jeffrey of Houston; Terry and Doyce Lynch of Arlington, Texas; Reverend Jay and Judy Barnes of Dayton, Texas and their children Charles and Grant; Janet and David Odell of Wichita, Kansas and their children Bryan and Jessica Ann.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 PM Sunday, January 4, at the funeral home.
