James Howard Evans
Graveside services for James Howard Evans, 96, of Longview, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2009, at the Hallsville Cemetery with the Reverend Jeff Hastings officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
He was born May 18, 1912, to George Thomas Evans and Julia Frances Tucker Evans on a farm in western Harrison County, Texas. He graduated from Hallsville High School, Tyler Commercial College and the Elkins Institute of Radio and Electronics in Dallas, Texas.
He began working for Humble Pipe Line Company in 1934 and retired from Exxon Pipeline Company after working 42 years and 2 months. He worked in Longview, New London, Cisco, Byrds, Borger and Pampa, Texas. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hallsville. While working at various places, he served on the Board of Stewards Official Board in Cisco, Byrds, Borger and Hallsville.
He enjoyed two hobbies very much. He was an Amateur Radio Operator HAM-WA5PZL for 40 years. The other hobby was music. He played the fiddle for numerous years four times a month at nursing homes, retirement centers, assisted living facilities and some special events until he developed health problems. The group he fiddled was "The Exes of Texas", a couples group of good Christian men and women. He was also a member of the American Radio Relay League and May Lodge #574, AF &AM of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Bernyce F. Wade Evans and his second wife Mildred S. Boozer Evans.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Carmen A. Evans Lewis and Weldon Lewis. granddaughters, Pamela Lynn Lewis and Kristi Lee Lewis; great grandchildren, Tyler James, Brittani and Cameron Wade Anderson; sister, Frances Summers; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special life time friends, Ben Gillentine, J. D. Brantley, Roy Bill Wilson, and Nelda Ottman.
