“Papa J”, as he was lovingly known by his family, was born in Church Hill, east of Henderson, Texas, on December 24, 1929, to Emmett Reese and Grace Williams Strong. He was married to the love of his life, Jackie B. Strong, for over 64 years. Jack was a graduate of Henderson High School and enjoyed many outdoor activities, such as, hunting, fishing and gardening. He worked over thirty years for Southwestern Electric Power Company in both Henderson and Longview where he served as the office manager until his retirement in 1992.
Jack served as a member and past president of the Longview Lions Club, as well as, a member and past president of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. Serving his community and others brought him much joy and satisfaction. He was a longtime member of Winterfield United Methodist Church of Longview and the Winmore Sunday School Class. After his move to Brookdale Assisted Living in Henderson, he became a member of First United Methodist Church of Henderson.
“Papa J” loved the Lord and spending time with his church family. He always looked forward to spending time with his family, most especially during holidays and other special events. He was a devoted father to Brenda and Mark, a proud grandfather to Shelby Lee Perry, Lauren Strong Reed and Lacy Strong and a loving great-grandfather to Caroline and Cooper Perry. He always thought of his son-in-law Scott and daughter-in-law Kim as his own children.
Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife Jackie, his mother and father, Grace and Emmett Strong; brothers, Lansing, Edward and Reese Strong; sisters, Jewel Weatherby, Melba Taylor and Mabel Ford. He is survived by his two children, Brenda Lee and husband Scott of Henderson, Mark Strong and wife Kim of Lufkin; three grandchildren, Shelby Perry and husband Brad, Lauren Reed and husband Jake of Austin, Lacy Strong of Paris, France, great-grandchildren, Caroline Perry and Cooper Perry of Henderson and brother, Charles Strong and wife Nancy of the Church Hill Community, as well as, a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the special staff of Brookdale Assisted Living in Henderson for the love and care shown to our “Papa J” while he was a resident there.
If desired, memorials may be given to the Salvation Army, the Heart Association, Winterfield United Methodist Church of Longview, Texas, or First United Methodist Church of Henderson, Texas.
