Jack or Jackie, as I knew him was my classmate and one of my best friends from the first grade through high school. Our homes were about a half-mile apart on Victory Drive in east Marshall. Jack is a central figure in some of my fondest memories of those long-ago days. I recall with special pleasure being invited to attend the 1946 OU-Texas football game with Jack and his family. We were pleased that Texas won the game 20 to 14 but surprised and perhaps a bit annoyed that OU had proved to be so tough. I was a Texas fan in those days.
Emerson says that Character is higher than Intellect, and I am sure that Jack would agree. But Jack had both: He was intelligent and morally upright. I admired him and loved him and mourn his passing. But I find joy in remembering his life and our friendship. May God's comfort be with all his dear ones.
As a man of faith, Jack has now heard the blessed words "Well done, good and faithful servant. ...Enter into the joy of your lord." Thanks be to God.##imported-begin##Kenneth Merrill##imported-end##
