Jack D. Huff
Memorial services for Jack D. Huff, 83, of Longview will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013 in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Longview with Dr. Roy James officiating. Entombment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum under the direction of Rader Funeral Home. Mr. Huff died Wednesday, July 17, in Longview.
Mr. Huff was born March 2, 1930, in Electra, Texas. He was the first child of Payton D. and Frances Huff. He grew up in Wichita County and graduated from Harrold High School in 1948. Mr. Huff received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts from North Texas State College in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, served 24 months active duty during the Korean Conflict, and remained in armed services as inactive for the mandatory eight years. He received an honorable discharge.
On December 28, 1955, he married Elvera Jung Becker at First Evangelical Church, Houston, Texas. He served as claims representative for Travelers Insurance Company for 31 years. He worked in Dallas from 1956 – 1961, then in Longview except for 3 years in Texarkana, Texas from 1968 – 1971.
Through the years, he was active in the Methodist Church, Sunday school, and chancel choir, and served various committees. Mr. Huff was a member of the Longview Masonic Lodge No. 404, Scottish Rite and Shrine. He worked with Boy Scouts and took a group to Philmont in New Mexico in 1976.
He appreciated the music programs in the schools, community and churches. He served as the LHS Band Booster president in 1977 – 1978, helping take the band for competition in Mexico City. He assisted on several youth choir and chancel choir trips by driving a church van. He went to Coventry, England with the chancel choir in 2008.
After retirement from Travelers Insurance Company in 1986, Jack continued working for various companies. He was a security guard for Noble Enterprises, made deliveries for the Med Shop, and in 2001 was courier for Internal Medicine Association.
For recreation in retirement, he enjoyed working at their acreage in Cass County where he could fish and hunt. In Longview he enjoyed Pioneers, keeping up the home place, regular coffee breaks with friends and other social events such as symphony and band concerts, and attended communion services at retirement centers.
Survivors include his wife of 57 ½ years, Elvera; his sons, Preston D. Huff of Grand Prairie; Clifford W. Huff of Longview; daughters-in-law, Trisha W. Huff of Grand Prairie; Deania Whitaker of Longview; granddaughter, Emily R. Huff of College Station; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann Donges of Corpus Christi and Lou and Gene Brown of Hughes Springs; five nieces and their husbands; brother-in-law and his wife Ken and Edna Hurley of Quitman; nephew-in-law, David Lasater and his wife Kay of Houston. Special loyal friends, Don Barnett and Charles Snyder.
