Mrs. England, Karen, & Family,
Condolences on your loss. I know Mr. England is now leading a greater band. Being in the Band was very good for me. It gave me purpose in school, and taught me the rewards of hard work and discipline. Originally, Jack insisted that if I wanted to be in the HS Band I had to play trumpet. However, I insisted on playing drums. He relented and I am ever thankful he did. My Junior year he was very complimentary after a marching practice in which Karen and I were in a little contest, perhaps unknowing to her, in which I decided the bass drummer me would set the tempo of a song and not the drum major Karen. Of course, the band followed their ears and not their eyes and Karen never stood a chance. I just did it to be ornery, but I think Mr. England realized what I had done. Instead of fussing at me, he complimented me. By being nice and knowing how to deal with a potentially difficult student, he made me a conformist who was happy to do whatever it took to please "Pappa Jack." After 30+ years, he stopped by my mother's house about a year or 2 ago and inquired about my sister and I. He still remembered us. And we will always remember him. Thanks Mr. England.##imported-begin##Steve Kennedy##imported-end##
Dear Mrs. England and Family,
I wish I had told Mr. England of his great influence in my life. Last year I was priviledged to be Elementary Teacher of the Year for the Longview Independent School District. Many times I was asked or had to write my philosophy of education and those whose influences were most evident in my teaching. Many times I wrote of the quiet, structured, teaching style of my mentor teacher and my band director, Jack England. He was such a special teacher. I hope that these words along with your many precious family memories will be a comfort in the months to come.
Very Sincerely,
Susan Graham Roeber '74##imported-begin##Susan Graham Roeber##imported-end##
I was not in band, but lots of my friends were, so I knew Mr. England through them. And every one of them loved & respected him. He was one of a kind, our Papa Jack. He was friendly to those of us who weren't in his class, just like he was to his students. My favorite stories are the ones about the band kids wrapping his house on Halloween, & him pretending to be furious!! But they all knew he loved it, & so they kept doing it , year after year. He was strict, but fair, & all those kids he taught are today reaping the rewards of being one of his kids. My son is in band, & he loves it, as do I being a booster & band mom. But I wish he had had the chance to have studied under Mr. England, because I know he'd love it even more.
To the England family, my deepest sympathy, & to all the former students...'just one more time.......we can't stop lovin' you....'##imported-begin##Lee Anne Barlow Vandermeer##imported-end##
Few may know that Mr. England showed so much care and respect for his students that he let me and my buddy John approach him and request that he play our arrangement and let us pass out words to a possible new fight song at the pep rally.
He did this and the song "Pirates Fight, Fight Fight" became the official fight song. It still is played and should be remembered for him also. That was in 1964.
I saw Mr. England a few years ago and I'll never forget his smile and especially making one of my proudest memories a reality.
God bless you all...##imported-begin##Mickey Wright##imported-end##

Mr. England's students and friends loved him so much that they had a "Honor Captain Jack" band reunion planned for his birthday on October 21, 2006.
Just as he lived his life, he told David Baker and others - who were like his own children - to go ahead and have the reunion even if he wasn't able to make it...he'd be there in Spirit if not in body. This was a selfless act and shows his focus on what was best for others.
Hopefully, the reunion will go on and Mr. England will be honored. I feel sure he will be watching!
May God bless his immediate family and his very large extended 'family' during this sad time.##imported-begin##Martha McKinney Ylitalo##imported-end##
Nancy told me Mr. England had passed away. I have very fond memories of Mr. England as my band director. He contributed a lot to my self confidence by including me when I didn't feel I deserved to be part of such a wonder band. I will never forget his instruction to me in life and music. I felt a part of group and he made that possible for me. Mr. England was definitely a key person in my High School journey. I am proud and thankful to have known him. I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. England. When I think of him and my years in band, I think about the FUN we had--the pep rallies, the football games, rehearsals, band trips, UIL contests. Each day, I looked forward to band class. Yes, there was hard work and discipline. However, being a part of this musical group was, for me, a reward after all the other studying/book learning we did during the school day. I enjoyed band class so much that I encouraged our daughter and son to participate in their school band and they did. As a result, they can both read music which will influence their lives forever.
I'm keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers. May God comfort and strengthen you all at this time and bring you peace.

Mr. England was never my actual band director, but he worked with us in our first years of band, as well as in junior high school band. I always remembered how gracious and kind he was. He was also my dad's neighbor, and we were always amazed at how hard he worked around his house. I'll never forget my dad and me seeing him up on his roof more than once - and we knew he was in his 70's! He was an incredible man, in more ways than one.
My sincere condolences to all his family at this time.
