J. W. "Dub" Hinton Jr.'s Obituary
J.W. was born October 1, 1933 in Arp, Texas to J.W. and Nancy Hinton, Sr. He passed away on March 21, 2017 after a courageous 5 ½ year battle with Alzheimers. A service will be held on March 23 at 2:00 pm at Greggton United Methodist Church.
Dub grew up in New London, Texas with his younger sister, Joyce. They always shared an incredible closeness. He graduated from New London High School in 1951. After graduating, he attended East Texas State University and Kilgore College where he played basketball. He then went on to The University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business in 1956.
On June 8, 1956, he married Willa Dean Young and they made Longview their home. In 1961, he went to work for Texas Eastman and worked there until he retired in 1996 after 35 years.
After retirement, he and Dean enjoyed traveling and spending time with their grandson, Camden. He was proud to be called “Da” and looked forward to doing whatever Camden wanted to do! One of Camden’s best memories of “Da” is that he taught him how to tie his shoes when he was little.
Dub and Dean were active members of Greggton United Methodist Church for over 30 years. He served on many church boards throughout the years. He was a member of the Agape Sunday School Class.
Dub was Past President of Cherokee Kiwanis Club. He was also Past President of the Longview Greggton Rotary Club where he was honored with the Paul Harris Fellow award.
Dub truly had “orange blood” and was a proud UT Lifetime Alumni. He had a closet full of burnt orange Longhorn shirts and would often change shirts several times during a UT football game hoping to help the “Horns” win.
J.W. was preceded in death by his parents, J.W. and Nancy Hinton, Sr., his granddaughter, Grace Ann Turner, and his brother in law Curtis Lacy.
He is survived by his wife Willa Dean, sister, Joyce “Sissie” Lacy of Bluffton, SC, daughter and son in law, Deanna and Jason Turner of Longview, grandson, Camden Turner, and nephew Scott Lacy of Bluffton, SC, as well as several cousins and many special friends.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Trinity Timbers Assisted Living and Memory Care for their loving care and devotion over the past year and a half. Also, they would like to thank Traditions Hospice for their gentle care and support over the past few months.
Memorials may be made to Greggton United Methodist Church.
