Ida Marie Vaughan
1920 – 2015
Ida Marie Vaughan, age 94, died peacefully in her sleep on May 31, one day after celebrating her upcoming 95th birthday with all her children, all her grandchildren and all her great-grandchildren. It was a blessing that everyone was able to visit with her and celebrate her life.
Mrs. Vaughan was born on June 6, 1920, to Dorina and Ambrose Martell, in Worcester, Massachusetts. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 43 years, Richard Curtis Vaughan, her daughter, Susan Channell, her grandson, George Burton and brothers Arthur and Edward. She is survived by her children: Richard Vaughan, Barbara Jedlicka and husband, Davor, David Vaughan and wife, Jenny, Elizabeth Vaughan, son-in-law, Jerry Channell, June Harris and husband, Ken, Robin Parrish and husband, Barry, and Christine Alden, 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ida graduated from Worcester Commerce High School and worked at the War Department in Washington DC before joining the very first Women’s Army Corps from 1943 to 1945 with a rank of Tech 4 Sergeant. During her service in Virginia, she met and married, Richard Vaughan. After they were discharged, they moved to Longview, Texas to raise their family.
Ida was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for over 50 years where she served as lector for daily and weekend masses, as well as participated with Catholic Daughters. She was a school secretary at Ware Elementary for 15 years, retiring from Longview ISD in 1985.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Magnolia Court Assisted Living in Nacogdoches for their care during the last 6 years of our mother’s life. Additionally, the family appreciated the care provided by Accolade Hospice in making Ida’s last days comfortable.
A visitation will be held at Rader Funeral Home, 1617 Judson Road, Longview, on Sunday, June 7, from 4 – 6 p.m. A recitation of the Rosary will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 8; 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
