Hubert Gordon Green's Obituary
A memorial service for Gordon Green will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church, Longview, Texas, on Monday, September 11 at 10 AM.
Gordon died at his residence in Longview on September 5 at the age of 97.
The son of Alice and Percy Green of Palestine, TX, Gordon was born on Oct. 6, 1908. He graduated from Palestine High School in 1926. He attended Texas A&M University, New York University and Columbia University. He was an avid supporter of Texas A&M and a longtime member of the Deep East Texas A&M Club.
In New York City in 1930, Gordon began a long career with the Texas Company later Texaco. In 1935 he married Mary Belle Gillespie of Dallas, Over many years, his assignments with Texaco took them to Amarillo, Texarkana, Longview and Dallas. Upon his 1971 retirement from Texaco as the manager of contractor sales in Dallas, they moved to Lake Cherokee near Longview.
Gordon and Mary Belle traveled widely, often with friends and family. If a far-away place came up in conversation, he had usually 'been there'.
Gordon was a very active lifelong Episcopalian. At Trinity Church, Longview, he was elected to numerous terms on the vestry and endowment board, served several times as senior warden and junior warden, and participated in the establishment of the Men of Trinity. In addition, he served as a delegate to the Diocesan Council and a member of search committees for three Trinity rectors. For many years Gordon was the official Sunday morning visitor of every Episcopalian listed as a patient at Good Shepherd Hospital and Longview Regional Hospital.
Other volunteer duties included serving on the board of directors of the Cherokee Water Company and the Elderville-Lakeport Volunteer Fire Department.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Percy Green, and his first wife Mary Belle Gillespie Green. Gordon is survived by his wife Betty Hunt Smith Green of Austin, his son, H. Gordon Green, Jr and wife Jean Ann of Dallas, his daughter, Nancy McWhorter and husband Gene of Longview, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
