This was one heroic and special lady. She deserves a plaque or statue at Pine Tree for her influence over so many people who were headed for oblivion but turned around a achieved so much in large part due to her inspired teaching. A true American legend, I think...

Mrs. Bivins had a great impact on my life too. I discovered in college I was pretty good at writing. Like other students I had Mrs. Bivins to thank for that. I use many of the skills she taught us to help my students write stories for the Pine Tree High School Cutlass newspaper. Writing is like a natural talent, thanks to her, and it's fun. I also try to show some of the same patience and understanding with my students that she showed us. I probably would not have chosen teaching as a profession had I not had Mrs. Bivins. She was a real inspiration. I enjoyed those times I delivered the high school newspaper to her house during the '80s and early '90s. She always told me fascinating stories about PTHS in the '40s and '50s. She remembered the Class of '61 at that time like it was yesterday. There will never be another teacher like Mrs. Bivins, and I feel honored to have been asked to write part of her obituary. I was saddened to hear of the passing of my dear teacher, Mrs. Bivins. The memorial written for her could not have been more accurate. She was one special lady and we will all miss her. I will always remember her beautiful smile and face. God blessed her with the ability to instill in me and others the desire to always do our best.

Ms. Bivins was my English teacher in 1966. She was a great lady, and a great teacher. Whoever wrote her obit did a good job of capturing the idea that she was someone who commanded respect just by her wonderful manner, and I will always owe her a debt of gratitude for all that she taught me.
