Hamilton "Hamp" Smead's Obituary
Memorial services for Hamilton P. “Hamp” Smead, Jr. will be at Longview Christian Fellowship Church, Tuesday August 12, 2014 at 2 pm with the Rev. Lester Wooten and Rev. Bob Cammack officiating under the direction of Rader Funeral Home. The family will have a private interment at Memory Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, August 11, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Rader Funeral Home.
Hamp was born January 18, 1933 in Shreveport, Louisiana to the late Peggy C. Smead and Hamilton P. Smead Sr. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 7, 2014. He lived all of his life in Longview and married the love of his life, Ann Killingsworth Smead in 1958. They established their home in Longview where they raised their three children.
Mr. Smead was graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas School of Law. He was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1955 and was also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Texas. He practiced law in Longview for over 50 years and served as Special County Judge in Gregg County in 1962. He was a member of the American Bar Association and the Gregg County Bar Association, serving as president of the Gregg County Bar in 1957 and was named as Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. He was the Senior Partner of the Longview firm Smead, Anderson, and Dunn Law firm. The partners enjoyed a long-term relationship beginning in 1976. He was President of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship in the 70’s. He was a long-time member of the Longview Christian Fellowship Church.
Mr. Smead was a fine and honorable man and a true gentleman. He loved traveling with his family and one of his greatest joys was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Smead was preceded in death by: his daughter Catherine Smead Steinmeyer, and his parents, Hamilton Smead Sr. and Peggy Smead.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Ann Killingsworth Smead; his children and their spouses: Samuel H Smead and wife, Jill; Susan Smead Pope and her husband, Bill; and Jeff Steinmeyer, husband of Catherine. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Matthew Russell and his wife, Brandi; Stephen Russell and his wife, Hunter; Meredith Steinmeyer; Shelby Steinmeyer; and Sam Smead Jr. Other survivors include the father of grandsons Matthew and Stephen, R. Kevin Russell; and a niece, Rhonda Barnes Russell and husband Tom.
The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Windridge Equestrian Center at 593 Windridge Rd., Gilmer, Texas 75645.
