Guella M. Casey's Obituary
Guella M Casey was born June 15, 1918 in Cherokee County, Texas, to Richard and Edith Murphy. She had one brother, Dewey Murphy, and they grew up on a farm near New Summerfield, Texas. She graduated from New Summerfield High School and attended Tyler Commercial College. Guella married Elmer Casey on September 24, 1944 and moved to Tacoma, Washington, as Elmer completed his WWII military service. Returning to Texas, they moved to Huntsville for Elmer to attend Sam Houston State University, then briefly to Winnie, Texas, and finally to Sweeny, Texas. Both were employed at the Phillips Petroleum Sweeny Refinery. They attended First Baptist Church, Sweeny, where Guella taught Sunday School and the Girl's Auxiliary. Guella later became a full time wife and mother to two daughters. Elmer went to his heavenly home suddenly in 1968. Guella devoted herself to raising her two daughters. She returned to East Texas in 1970, moving to Henderson where she worked as a Deputy County Clerk for Rusk County from 1973 to 1994. After retirement, Guella was always busy volunteering with her church, First Baptist, Henderson, and caring for neighbors, friends, and relatives. Guella loved to cook and enjoyed hosting Thanksgiving in her home well into her 90s. She continued to drive until she was 98. She has lived the last eight years in Longview. Guella was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 10, 2024, at the age of 105.
She is survived by her daughters, Sheryl Brightwell of Tyler, Karen Thompson and son-in-law, Spencer Thompson of Longview, grandchildren Travis Yates and wife Erin of Sachse, Justin Thompson and wife Honey of Longview, Meagan Thompson of Carthage and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and additional family and friends.
A graveside service for Mrs. Casey will be held at McDonald Cemetery in New Summerfield, TX at 1pm on Thursday, February 15. A time of viewing will also be held this Wednesday at the Funeral Home in Henderson through out the day.
