Gloria Ann Fort's Obituary
Gloria Ann "Memaw" Fort, 78, of Longview peacefully passed away on May 25, 2013, at Whispering Pines Nursing Home. She ended her long six year battle with various illnesses with her family by her side. Gloria was the oldest of four children and was born in Overton, Texas on April 5, 1935 to parents Jessie and Lovenia Ashmore.
In 1953 she met and married J.C. Fort, a young airman stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base and thus began a 60 year love affair. Gloria followed J.C. around the world during his USAF career that included living in Morocco, Africa and Madrid, Spain.
Gloria was a member of the First Christian "Disciples of Christ" denomination and served in the congregations at First Christian, Gladewater and First Christian, Longview.
At Gladewater, she served in numerous capacities including worship chairman, board member and choir director. She loved decorating, music and her family. Gloria was also an officer in the Disabled American Veteran Auxiliary.
Gloria is survived by her loving and devoted husband J.C. Fort of Longview, son and daughter in law Gary and Faith Fort of Hallsville, daughter and son in law Pennie and Jeff Chandler of Rowlett, daughter Samantha Fort of Longview, brother Doug Ashmore of Hallsville, sister Peggy Duncan of Bend, Oregon and sister Gayle Weeks of Marshall. Gloria is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren with one more on the way.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and attendants at Good Shepherd Hospital, the staff at Whispering Pines Nursing Home and Southern Care Hospice for their professional and loving care over the past six years.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 6 pm to 8 pm at Rader Funeral Home in Longview followed by a chapel service at the funeral home on Thursday at 10 am. Internment will be at Memory Park immediately following the chapel service. Presiding over the services will be Reverend Dr. Richard Emerson, Reverend David Farmer and Reverend Gala Strunk.
Memorials may be given to First Christian Church Music Dept. in Gloria's memory.
