Glen L. Brown passed peacefully into the arms of God on December 15, 2023.
Born June 1, 1931, in Waxahachie, TX, to Ted A. Brown and Mamie Freeman Brown, he moved to Longview at the age of 6, where he lived the rest of his life. A 1948 graduate of Longview High School, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 41 years while serving 25 years in the Texas National Guard with the 49th Armored Division. Glen was a Christian , whose servant heart showed in his care for others, including his family, for whom he modeled Christian behavior and a strong work ethic: he was a faithful member of Wesley Methodist Church and then First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, volunteered in the church kitchen for many years, served on various committees, including chair of the Deacon Visitation Committee, and participated in 36 mission trips to Mexico. As a member of the Texas Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief Team, he worked many natural disasters, including the tsunami in Sri Lanka. For 25 years in his retirement, he faithfully served as a volunteer for CHRISTUS Good Shepherd, amassing 28,743 hours of work. He was a Boy Scout leader, band booster president for the Longview High School Band, and faithful supporter of his children’s activities.
Glen was married to fellow Lobo Peggy Denson for 24 years, whom he lovingly cared for in declining health. He was then blessed to find a second partner, Lurene Propes Loftin, with whom he would spend the next 48 years traveling and enjoying their grandchildren and time with dear friends. Their domino group of 8 couples spent years of Friday nights playing Mexican Train. Glen and Lurene traveled to all 50 states and visited Europe four times and took monthly short trips, checking out every little town and country road. Glen was a proud veteran and patriot and often shed tears at the sight of the U.S. flag, including the one flying in his front yard.
Glen is survived by his loving wife, Lurene, and four children: David Brown (Susan); Becky Johnson (Eddie); stepson Keith Loftin (Kay); Kenneth Brown (Sarah) in addition to nine grandchildren: Dave Brown, Peggy Riggs (Dustin) , Martha Blalock, (Brad), Betsy Colosky (Danny), Tiffany Loftin, Elise Brown (Blake), Jeff Loftin (Sara), Gorman Brown, and Matthew Loftin, as well as 9 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. His brother, Ron Brown (Bennie) of Longview, and several cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, spouse Peggy, brother Donald Brown of McKinney, step-daughter Lynn Loftin, and granddaughter Stephanie Loftin.
Memorials may be made to the church garden at First Baptist Church Longview, to the Christus Good Shepherd Auxiliary, or to an organization of your choice.
